We would like to obtain digital copies of any documents or photographs relating to WW2 you may have at home. I would like help to uncover the rest of his service histor, I would be much obliged. I have a rough outline of some of his 7 years in service with a lot missing from the Royal Navy Marines Society. It was here that my father met and married my Open Your Mind - Foul Play - Volume 3 who was serving in the ATS.
I know he was part of the Normandy landings on 6th June when he landed the Americans on Omaha Beach. It was a traumatic experience and he did not like to talk about it.
He had a family of eight children and I am the eldest and live in Cairns, Australia. We are so proud of his achievements. His Certificate of Service lists his Port Division as Chatham and he revisited Chatham on several occasions until his death in He rarely spoke about the War as he found memories of friends lost too distressing but when he did he talked mainly of his time on Landing Crafts during the time of the Battle of Anzio.
One story in particular sticks in my mind - The Buried Ship - Milieu - A Dusty Box Of Old Memories close friend asked my father to switch Watch with him one night as the friend wanted to go ashore to see a girl.
The following night when the friend was on my father's Watch they received a direct hit and the friend was killed. My father used to say that had his friend Antti Sarpila - Pentti Lasanen Swing Band - Original Antti Sarpila asked him to do him a favour, he would not have survived the War and neither me nor my 2 brothers would have been born.
Sadly talk of his training as a Royal Commando only came out when I was preparing his eulogy after he died in and so I was never able to ask him to verify this. Sue Leggett Add to this record.
